the countdown begins,.,,
exactly 2 weeks until surgery.....
austin bunionectomy on my left foot.
so not sexy. but so necessary. well... i can potentially keep walking with that bunion and joint pain (arthristis anyone?) for another 3 years, but the condition might deteriorate to a point where the surgery needed to correct the problem would be more severe and i'd end up in an actual cast for 6 months rather than a soft surgical shoe for 2 months.
there's a great web site that has a flash animation of what exactly will happen to my foot. click on the link, scroll down, and then click on "2. austin bunionectomy with single screw fixation". yes, i'll have a titanium screw in my foot forever. woo hoooo! they told me it shouldn't set off the airport security alarms.
or if you want to see actual photos of a bunionectomy, check this out....austin bunionectomy . and if you want even more graphic photos , check it out. but be warned, they're pretty vivid.
i'm not nervous about the surgery itself... ok, maybe a little. i'm more concerned with the recovery and how long it will last and the mobility i'll lose. plus my foot could be swollen for up to 6 months!! i already know that i can't wear heels for almost a whole year. i've come to terms with that. i just don't want fat hobbitt feet for 6 months!!! i hate that i can't workout for so many months. i'm freaked out about gaining weight from not being able to workout. i'm freaked about about losing any muscle that i've built over the last few months. i'm freaked out about seeing my crusty, bloody foot after the bandages are taken off. i'm freaked out about trying to get to work in my 3rd week post-op with a cane on the subway during rush hour... having my foot stomped on, having people yell at me for going so slow, having to take an exra half hour more to get to work b/c my usual brisk walking is going to slow down to a hobble.
but i can't let my fear get in the way. i gotta get this done. hopefullly it will go well, and i can do my right foot sometime next year, and then run a marathon the year after that!!! how's that for amibitious.
